Federal Semester students in the Health Policy concentration study various issues affecting American health, including health insurance, health legislation, and other concerns. Federal Semester students in the Homeland Security Policy concentration examine various security issues in depth, including responses to natural disasters, terrorism, and other concerns. The goal of trips to Capitol Hill is to provide first-hand experience and a chance to meet with policy makers on Capitol Hill.

  Health Policy

On a recent trip to Capitol Hill, students met with a health policy staff member for Congressman Hoyer. Students then had the exceptional experience of meeting with senior officials at the Department of Health and Human Services. Students met also with a representative from Governor O'Malley's office to discuss health issues facing Maryland residents and the process by which states work with the federal government to dispense Medicare and Medicaid. Additionally, a staff member from the Children's Defense Fund met with the students to discuss health issues unique to children, and the ways in which non-profit organizations can affect federal policy.

  Homeland Security Policy

On a recent trip to Capitol Hill, students met with a staff member on the House Committee on Homeland Security. Students then had the honor of gathering in the National Response Communications Center at FEMA to meet with several directors of operations for FEMA's multiple areas of focus. Lastly, students met with a representative from Governor O'Malley's office to discuss the state of Maryland's security concerns and the process by which states work with the federal government to provide security for its citizens. The Executive Director of Council for a Livable World also met with the students to discuss ways in which they advocate regarding federal policy.
